UMGC-NMFA Scholarship
for Military Spouses

UMGC offers a scholarship to active-duty military spouses, exclusively through the NMFA.

Through the UMGC-NMFA Scholarship program, University of Maryland Global Campus awards a minimum of 10 scholarships, worth up to $1,500 each, through the National Military Family Association (NMFA) to spouses of active-duty, Reservist, and/or National Guard servicemembers.

This scholarship program is made possible through a generous grant from ÐÒ¸£±¦µ¼º½ alumna Lt. Col. Dona Hildebrand (U.S. Air Force, Retired).

Eligible applicants must be current or newly enrolled students who have earned no more than 30 credits and are seeking their first undergraduate degree at UMGC. The scholarship will cover up to two full courses (6 credits).

The application period is open from October 1 to December 31.

Eligibility Criteria

A candidate for this scholarship must be a ÐÒ¸£±¦µ¼º½ student who is:

  • A registered member of the NMFA
  • A U.S. citizen or permanent resident noncitizen
  • A current or newly enrolled student who has earned no more than 30 credits at UMGC
  • A military spouse of an active-duty, Reserve, or National Guard servicemember
  • A degree-seeking student pursuing a first undergraduate degree
  • Enrolled or will enroll in at least 6 credits during the spring term for the academic year in which the application is submitted
  • Not receiving 100% tuition assistance or reimbursement from work

How to Apply

  1. Complete the UMGC-NMFA Scholarship application by the scholarship deadline.
  2. Complete the and include the $50 application fee by the scholarship deadline.
  3. Submit proof of military status to the Office of Admissions Services at admissions@umgc.edu by January 9.
    Documents may include:
    • A copy of DEERS form 1172-2
      OR
    • A copy of your marriage certificate AND one of the following.
      • Proof of sponsor's service statement or letter
      • Copy of sponsor's most recent enlistment or commissioning contract
      • Copy of sponsor's tuition assistance form showing military service expiration date
      • Copy of sponsor's leave and earnings statement with military service expiration date
  4. Have your high school or previous institution(s) send official transcripts directly to UMGC by January 9.

Students may contact an advisor an any time after being admitted to request an evaluation of transfer credits and design a degree completion plan during their first term.

Scholarship Deadline

The application deadline for the spring 2025 UMGC-NMFA Scholarship for Military Spouses is December 31, 2024.

 

Scholarship Award & Disbursement

  • Selection for the scholarship awards will be judged solely on the essay.
  • Students will be notified by January 31 if they will be awarded this scholarship.
  • Students may register for the spring term at any time prior to the UMGC-NMFA Scholarship application deadline but are responsible for providing payment for all courses at the time of enrollment. Early registration does not influence the scholarship award decision.
  • If selected for the scholarship, the scholarship funds will be applied to your account within 10 business days of enrollment in courses.
