Education Benefits for Veterans

Explore your education benefits, financial aid, and other options to help you earn your degree for less.

You can use your veterans education benefits to help pay for your University of Maryland Global Campus education.

Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill® (Active-Duty Increased Educational Benefits)

Montgomery GI Bill® - Active Duty benefits are based on your training time (in an eight-week session, you must take at least 5 credits to receive your maximum benefit). If eligible, a book allowance will also be paid directly to you. If you are using Chapter 30 Montgomery GI Bill® benefits, you are responsible for paying your tuition and fees directly to the university and are required to .

Chapter 31: Veteran Readiness & Employment (VR&E)

VR&E benefits for tuition and fees are paid directly to UMGC. If eligible, you may also have your application fee paid. Your VA case manager must forward your VA Authorization Form to ÐÒ¸£±¦µ¼º½ to authorize your enrollment. For additional information, you can contact UMGC's Veterans Certification Office at CH31@umgc.edu.

Chapter 32: Veterans Educational Assistance Program

Chapter 33: Post-9/11 GI Bill®

National Call to Service Program

If you are eligible for the , you have a choice of the following benefits: a cash bonus, repayment of student loans, entitlement to education benefits equal to the three-year monthly Chapter 30 rate for 12 months, or entitlement to education benefits to 50 percent of the less than three-year monthly Chapter 30 rate for 36 months.

Veterans Assistance Fund

Veterans enrolled at ÐÒ¸£±¦µ¼º½ can apply for financial assistance from the Veterans Assistance Fund.

In-State Tuition

Maryland state law requires public institutions of higher education in Maryland to classify a veteran as in-state if the veteran was honorably discharged and resides in or is domiciled in Maryland.

The Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014 requires public institutions of higher education to classify veterans and their spouses and dependent children as in-state if all of the following requirements are met:

  • Lives in Maryland;
  • Served at least ninety (90) days in the military prior to discharge; and
  • Is using Chapter 33 Post-9/11 GI Bill® or Chapter 30 Montgomery GI Bill® benefits

Additionally, public institutions of higher education are required to classify veterans as in-state if all of the following requirements are met:

  • The veteran lives in the state in which the institution is headquartered; and
  • The veteran is using Chapter 31 Veteran Readiness and Employment benefits; or
  • The veteran is using Chapter 35 Survivors’ and Dependents’ Education Assistance (DEA) benefits. Effective 1 August, 2022.

Section 103

The university permits any student using benefits under Chapter 31 (Veteran Readiness & Employment) or Chapter 33 (Post 9/11 GI Bill®) ("covered individual") to attend or participate in the course of education during the period beginning on the date on which the individual provides to the educational institution a certificate of eligibility (COE) for entitlement to educational assistance ending on the earlier of the following dates: 1. The date on which payment from the VA is made to the institution 2. 90 days after the date the institution certified tuition and fees following the receipt of the COE.

The university will not impose any penalty, including the assessment of late fees, the denial of access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities, or the requirement that a covered individual borrow additional funds, on any covered individual because of the individual's inability to meet his or her financial obligations to the institution due to the delayed disbursement of funding from the VA under Chapter 31 or 33, for a period of no less than 90 days.
