Online Guide to Writing and Research Academic Integrity and Documentation

Types of Documentation

Note Citations

Note citations are more commonly used in the fields of humanities, fine arts, history, philosophy, and religion. There are two types of note citations:

  • Footnotes – use superscript numbers in the text and related notes at the bottom of the page

  • Endnotes - use superscript numbers in the text and related notes at the end of the paper, article, or chapter

Note citation examples

Every note in the text needs a corresponding footnote or endnote. Follow your required style guide to determine how to cite each source and if you should use footnotes or endnotes.

Whether you use footnotes or endnotes, you will also need a bibliography that includes a list of all the sources used in your assignment.

Bibliography Example

Pearson, Carol S. Awakening the Heroes Within. San Francisco: Harper, 1991.

Vogler, Christopher. The Writer’s Journey: Mythic Structure for Storytellers and Screenwriters. California: Michael Wiese Productions, 1992.

Key Takeaways

  • Note citations use either footnotes or endnotes to indicate information is from a source material.

  • Each note citation must have a corresponding entry in the bibliography.
