Graduate Transfer Credit Evaluation

Jump start your master's degree at UMGC with transfer credits.

At UMGC, you could be eligible to transfer up to 12 credits toward a master's degree or up to 6 credits toward a graduate certificate.

How It Works

For Most Master’s Degree and Graduate Certificate Programs

We may accept up to 12 credits toward your graduate degree at UMGC if your credits were earned at an approved institution and the credits are related to your program of study.

We may accept up to 6 graduate transfer credits toward our certificate programs.

We do not accept transfer credits in the Doctor of Business Administration or Doctor of Management in Community College Policy and Administration.

Transfer credits toward your graduate degree at UMGC must meet the following criteria:

  • Your credits must have been earned as graduate credit.
  • Your credits must have been earned at an approved institution and be equivalent to graduate-level coursework or recommended for graduate-level credit by the American Council on Education
  • You must have earned a B (3.0) or better in the courses considered for transfer. These grades, however, will not be included in the calculation of your grade point average at UMGC.
  • Have been completed within three years of your first term of enrollment in a graduate degree or certificate program at UMGC.
  • Your department advisor and program director must determine that your transfer courses are relevant to your program of study.

For Graduate Programs and Certificates That Require CBR 600, DCL 600M, or DCL 600T

  • We may accept exactly 6 credits of graduate coursework for transfer as replacement for CBR 600, DCL 600M, or DCL 600T, if earned at an approved institution.
  • If you have previously earned a master’s degree from an approved institution, you are eligible to receive transfer credit for CBR 600, DCL 600M, or DCL 600T in recognition of the fundamental competencies essential for successful completion of a graduate degree program.
  • If you have earned graduate credit but have not earned a master’s degree, you may request a review of transfer credit for CBR 600, DCL 600M, or DCL 600T.
  • All graduate credits offered for transfer credit in replacement of CBR 600, DCL 600M, or DCL 600T are reviewed for approval and must meet the following criteria:
  • Credits must have been earned as graduate credit.
  • Credits must have been earned at an approved institution and be equivalent to graduate-level coursework or recommended for graduate-level credit by ACE.
  • A grade of B or higher must have been earned in the courses considered for transfer. These grades, however, will not be included in the calculation of the grade point average at UMGC.
