Master skills in three healthcare areas: administration, information systems and technology, and leadership.

The online master’s degree in health information management and technology at University of Maryland Global Campus is taught by healthcare technology professionals who will help you develop the expertise to oversee the complex coordination of your organization’s health information management needs. If you are an experienced healthcare professional or an IT specialist working in a healthcare setting, or you’re looking to transition to this exciting field, this program will help you obtain the skills and knowledge you need to apply best practices in health informatics and information management in the healthcare environment.

General Master's Degree Requirements

  • You must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher at all times.
  • All degree requirements must be fulfilled within five consecutive years.
  • Any transfer credits must have been earned within the above five-year time frame to be applied toward a graduate degree.

Accelerated Pathway

If you completed your undergraduate degree at UMGC with coursework in health services management, an accelerated pathway between our undergraduate and graduate degree programs in this area may allow you to reduce your total coursework for this program by up to 6 credits.

Dual Master’s Degree with Health Info Management/Data Analytics

If you earn a master’s degree in health information management and technology, you can save up to 12 credits on a master’s degree in data analytics through this dual degree pathway.

For this pathway, you will need to have taken the health information management and technology degree first. To complete the second degree (data analytics), you must complete all core courses and the capstone course, for a total of 18 credits.Ìý

ÐÒ¸£±¦µ¼º½ also offers a dual degree option in which you can earn a master’s degree in healthcare administration first and then save up to 15 credits on a master’s in health information management and technology as your second degree.

UMGC is an Approved Education Partner of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), and our graduates are eligible to take the CAHIMS/CPHIMS (Certified Associate/Professional in Health Information and Management Systems) certification exams.

Additional Program Information

Although it is not required, you will find it beneficial to have three years of professional work experience in a healthcare setting, especially in health information technology or information technology. Strong writing skills are also encouraged.

Upsilon Phi Delta (Healthcare Management)

Upsilon Phi Delta, the national academic honor society of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, elevates and encourages scholarship, standards, and ethics in the healthcare field. This honor society recognizes scholarship in the healthcare field, and honors students who achieve distinction in healthcare-relevant programs of study in universities and colleges.

It is available to undergraduate and graduate students. Undergraduate membership is open to students pursuing a major in health services management. Undergraduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and at least 18 credits of health services management coursework, with a GPA of 3.25 or higher in those courses. Graduate student membership is limited to individuals who are actively pursuing their graduate degrees in one of UMGC's healthcare-related programs, meet the national eligibility standards of a minimum GPA of 3.5, have completed 18 credits, and are invited to become a member. a. The student retention rate for the MS in Health Information Management and Technology program in the academic year 2022–2023 was 88 percent.

b. The student graduation rate was 21 percent (84 students) in that academic year.

c. The program graduation rate is at 86 percent after 48 months in the program.

d. About 79 percent of the students in the program were employed full-time and another 9 percent were employed part-time.Ìý

e. As a result of studying in the program, about 6 percent of students changed jobs and more than 7 percent advanced in their current jobs. The rest of the students stated changes such as improved or enhanced job skills, improved professional networks, increased salaries, or improved chances to obtain better jobs.

f. 96 percent of students expressed high satisfaction with the program offerings.
