ADELPHI, Md. (August 1, 2023)—Gregory W. Fowler, PhD, president of University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), has been named an “Influential Marylander” for 2023 by The Daily Record, which was founded in 1888 and reports on business, law, and government., He has also been named to the paper’s Power 30 list for higher education for three consecutive years.

The “Influential Marylander” list debuted in 2006 and recognizes those who are leaving a mark on communities across the state. Honorees were selected by the editors of The Daily Record for their contributions in their respective fields and for their leadership in Maryland.

“The 2023 Influential Marylanders are, quite simply, inspirational,” said Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, managing director of The Daily Record. “Their hard work and dedication to their fields have changed the landscape of Maryland through their extraordinary efforts. They make a difference in communities throughout the state every day.”

Fowler, who was chosen for his transformational leadership in education, began his tenure as president of UMGC in January 2021, building on the university’s deep history of innovation in serving adults in the workforce and the military in Maryland and around the world. He is committed to developing innovative learning experiences that meet students where they are. He is in the forefront of using virtual reality and immersive learning technologies to build social cohesion among students studying online. Last fall, UMGC became one of the first universities in the country to offer classes in the virtual reality “Metaverse.”

The university also introduced a new virtual learning environment—the Multi-Dimensional Applied Relevant System, or MARS—that uses virtual learning labs to prepare cybersecurity students to combat cyber attacks. The university recently won a gold award for the MARS implementation at the 2023 1EdTech Learning Impact Conference.

“This is an honor I share with every member of our global team, serving students in 175 locations around the world and dedicated to helping each one succeed,” said Fowler. “We are committed to providing wrap-around support—from helping students to prepare for their educational journey to lifetime career support for our alumni—and bringing the right learning experience to the right student at the right time and in the right way.”

Fowler is a nationally recognized and sought after speaker on organizational leadership, the role of the university in the learning journey, leveraging technology in the educational setting, and meeting workforces demands with learning experiences that align with workforce needs and deliver what they promise.
