UMUC Guam Commencement to Take Place May 11

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Guam Commencement ceremony on May 11 will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa, Tumon, Guam. Guest seating will begin at 11 a.m., but graduates and participants are asked to arrive no later than 9:30 a.m.

The ceremony will include a keynote address by Kara Van Dam, Ph.D., vice provost for Overseas Academic Affairs and the dean of the UMUC Undergraduate School. Van Dam holds both a master's degree and a doctorate in linguistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She started her career in higher education as the assistant dean of faculty at Kaplan University, in 2005. She then advanced in her career with Kaplan University to become the dean for the School of General Education and eventually, vice provost of Academic Affairs.

She joined UMUC in 2014 as the vice provost of Academic Affairs and has since been promoted to her current position. Her extensive knowledge and experience in higher education initiatives ensure that UMUC’s faculty, staff, and students—both stateside and overseas—are supported in rich learning environments and that the bachelor and undergraduate certificate programs offered by UMUC help students develop as competent and confident individuals and professionals.

James B. Cronin, UMUC vice president and director, Asia, will preside over the ceremony. Music will be provided by the Guam Territorial Band.

In addition to the ceremony, a post-commencement reception will be held at the same location, beginning at about 12:30 p.m.
